Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD)
Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD) are oral appliances that are used to treat sleep-related breathing disorders, such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). These devices work by positioning the lower jaw, or mandible, slightly forward, which opens up the airway and helps to prevent the collapse of the soft tissues at the back of the upper airway during sleep. MADs are typically custom-made by a dentist or other qualified healthcare provider, and are worn in the mouth during sleep. They are often made of a comfortable, durable, and easily cleanable material, such as acrylic or silicone. MADs can be an effective alternative to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD) can offer several benefits, such as reduces snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Some of the key benefits of MADs include:
-
Improved Sleep Quality for patient and/ or bedpartner: By positioning the jaw forward, MADs can help to open the airway and reduce the frequency and severity of breathing pauses during sleep as well as snoring.
-
Increased Energy and Alertness: with improved sleep quality, individuals using MADs may experience increased energy and alertness during the day. Better sleep quality can lead to improved quality of life.
-
Well tolerated: Unlike other treatments for OSA, such as surgery, MADs are a non-invasive treatment option that do not require surgery or the use of a mask or machine.
-
Customizable: MADs are custom-made for everyone being well tolerated and efficacious.
