Respiratory Polygraphy

Respiratory Polygraphy (RP) is a home-based sleep test that measures breathing patterns to diagnose sleep-disordered breathing such as obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). By focusing specifically on respiratory signals, Respiratory Polygraphy provides a reliable, efficient way to screen for common sleep-related breathing conditions.

We offer Respiratory Polygraphy testing for adults and children across the UK. Our physiologists can set up the device in person at your home, or it can be delivered to you and set up remotely, giving you flexibility and convenience.

Every test is analysed by UK-based consultant sleep physician, ensuring accuracy, clinical oversight, and clear reporting from referral to diagnosis.

Who Should Have a Respiratory Polygraphy Test?

Performing a respiratory polygraphy test helps to identify sleep-disordered breathing, if you are displaying these symptoms and support the right diagnosis and treatment for you.
You may be recommended a respiratory polygraphy test if you experience any of the following:

Loud, persistent snoring

Excessive daytime sleepiness or unrefreshing sleep

Witnessed pauses in breathing during sleep

Morning headaches or a dry mouth

Difficulty with concentration or memory

High blood pressure or other cardiovascular risks

What Does Respiratory Polygraphy Involve?

Respiratory Polygraphy (RP) is a multi-channel sleep study that records your breathing patterns, airflow, oxygen levels, and heart rate overnight while you sleep at home. it is highly effective at detecting the breathing interruptions seen in conditions like obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).

During the test, the device typically records:

Airflow through your nose and mouth

Chest and abdominal breathing effort

Oxygen saturation levels (SpO₂)

Heart rate

Snoring sounds and body position

This straightforward test helps your clinician identify if you have sleep-disordered breathing, so you can get the treatment and support you need.

Why Is Respiratory Polygraphy Used?

Respiratory polygraphy is usually recommended as a first-line test when your doctor suspects obstructive sleep apnoea, and you don’t have other significant medical conditions or complex sleep disorders. This home-based, less intensive test is especially suitable when convenience and comfort are priorities.

Respiratory polygraphy offers a cost-effective and accessible way to confirm or rule out sleep apnoea and helps guide decisions about treatment, such as starting CPAP therapy.

How Is the Test Performed?

A trained IPD physiologist will set up your respiratory polygraphy test, either by fitting the equipment in person or delivering the device to your home and guiding you remotely. You will wear a small device with sensors that monitor your breathing and oxygen levels throughout the night, typically while you sleep at home.

After your study, our sleep physiologist downloads and analyses the data, and a consultant sleep physician produces a report and recommendations of your results. This study is non-invasive, comfortable, and well-tolerated by both adults and children.
